Why I’m Launching The Helm

A few weeks ago, I reached out to congratulate the CEO of a newly launched digital agency. What started as a quick message turned into a brilliant conversation — not just about her plans for the business, but about the invisible gaps in support for women stepping into leadership for the first time.

She was sharp, experienced, and excited to lead. She also saw her female leadership as a genuine differentiator for her agency in an industry still led mostly by men. It’s her first time as CEO, though she’s learned from some of the best.

At one point, she referred to herself as part of the “next generation of leadership,” clearly viewing me as part of the generation that came before. I paused for a moment — I don’t quite see myself as “previous generation” just yet — but on reflection, I took it as recognition. A nod to the modicum of wisdom and experience I’ve gained over the years, and a reminder that newer leaders benefit from being able to access that when they need it.

We swapped stories. I shared what it was like to:

  • Step into the shoes of a beloved founder — and figure out how to honour their legacy while still making the role your own.

  • Land squarely on the “glass cliff,” facing financial challenges and investor expectations I hadn’t even known existed.

  • Lead an M&A process for the first time, with people’s careers and futures on the line.

  • Feel the shift when peers become direct reports, and leadership starts to feel just a little lonely.

I’d been thinking for a while about starting a networking group — maybe to discuss AI or trends in retail. But this conversation made it clear: there is a real need for women who’ve just taken the helm to have a space to ask the hard questions, learn from each other, and talk honestly about what it really takes.

So, I’m launching The Helm — an informal, peer-led group for first-time female CEOs and MDs in digital agencies.
No fees. No formality. Just honest conversations and connection.

Why just women?

I’ve avoided women-only groups for most of my career. I’ve always believed gender shouldn’t define your opportunity. But the truth is: boardrooms, investors, and executive teams are still mostly male. And some of the challenges women face in those rooms are best understood by others who’ve been there too.

Why CEOs and MDs?

The Helm is for CEOs and Managing Directors — those who carry the weight of final decisions. Even with a strong team, the role can feel isolating. And while you may answer to a board, global CEO, or financial backers, they’re not your peers — you’re expected to lead with clarity, even when things feel uncertain. This is a space to connect with others who truly understand that responsibility — and the loneliness that can come with it.

Why digital agencies?

While many leadership challenges are universal, running a client-facing service business adds another layer — constant delivery pressure, shifting scopes, and the demands of a growing team. The client/vendor dynamic can also limit how openly we talk about the challenges we face. That’s why The Helm is focused on leaders of digital agencies and service businesses — to create space for candid, peer-level conversation.

Since I first floated this idea, I’ve heard from dozens of leaders — early in their journey, seasoned in their roles, men and women alike. And the same theme comes through again and again:

“I wish something like this had existed when I was starting out.”

If that resonates, you’re warmly invited.
DM me for details on our first session, happening this May.

Let’s take the helm — together.
